To help preserve its shape and finish:

Hardware care: Metal finishes naturally evolve with use and over time. Antique brass-tone hardware may gradually lose some shine, develop a patina or change in tone, particularly through friction or contact with moisture, perfume, cosmetics and other products. These natural changes are part of normal wear and are not in themselves a manufacturing defect.
